Last Results
Progression last week
The following points are discussed:
- Tell how the story is built up
- Tell why you choose some parameters and their values
- Design, for example, 3 perfect spaces then a good whole building
- Try to fix the lightpipes to the function of the space
- Begin with writing the rapport/paper
- Design -> Test -> Reflect -> Improve -> render the model
- Fix all the solo walls
- Look also to extreme days (like 21 july)
- Approach is good, but the lightpipes are chosen randomnly, why?
- Make the final design not to absolut
- How I am gonna use the spaces?
- How create interaction between solo spaces
- Look in practice or earlier published papers for examplex, am I Columbus?
- Focus your project on a new part of the research
I think all these point are important to do something whit it

First results after improved approach
The reached results are investigate my hypothesis about I expect to reach. The mount of illuminces is a bit lower, because DIALux can't calculate with glass in the modus I used for it. If you take 80% of the mount, it is the good mount for it.
Today I want to create my whole building and I try to do that, so I can presentate it to Axel on thursday.

New Approach
Isolines
Mount of isolines
Every space had two paramaters, namely the mount of luxes and the needed squared meters. This two parameters give me some isolines that suffice my demands. With that isoline I can create a space. In the sheet below I described the process.
Now I do research to get all the different isolines. I do that in DIALux, after that research I can create my whole building, so I look forward to it!

Midterm presentation, monday 29 september
After my presentation, where I told about my theme, approach, summary of my weblog, first results and the next step I get some crituques. Namely:
- integrate every step I made for the different studies
- design also with one paramter, like best orientation
- design a new form for the lightpipe
- look to every date and time in the year, also for an overcast and sunny sky
- maybe use moving lightpipes in the roof
I think it is clearly what to do this comming weeks. Thursday I had a meeting with Truus and I hope she can push me in the right way of my process.

First results out of DIALux
Today I research the volume of the space under the ground and the influence of more lightpipes in the roof. My starting point was a space of 4x4x2,8 meter. For the location I used Amsterdam and the date of the calculations is 21 march at 9 o'clock. After every calculation I evaluate the rapport and made some steps to improve the model. The final conclusion for the volume is a cilindrical form, because that form don't loose light in the edges. This weekend I try to get my reseaches in a further development. Monday I will presentate more results, so I try my best. The pictures below shows my progress of today. Because only CAD-files can imported in the program and the long calculationtime, it is a bit less I think, but very hopefull!!!

Geometry lightpipes
Schem of ligthpipes
Efficiency of specular and diffused lightpipes
Some interesting studies investigate that there is a perfect relationship between hight, width and length. For specular lightpipes the relationshop is Height vs. Width smaller then 15 and for difuse pipes it is Height vs. Width smaller then 2,5. The relationship between width and length is simple, Length is Width. So squared lightpipes are the most efficient. The article only goed about sqaured lightpipes, so I concentrate me only at squared pipes. DIALux can't calculate cilindrical pipes, so it is not a part of my research.
Tonight I post a new message after the meeting with Hester

Training DIALux
Third meeting, monday 22 september
Also today I started with training DIALux and fore so far, it is not diffecult. Fot inexperienced users its a good begin and the program is free. (http://www.dialux.de/). I showed two floorplans for my design, a cilindrical and quedratic one. Because I need a starting point, I made them. The solation is a mix between those two plans. Both plans I want program in DIALux and play with some different paramters. Below I show the plans.
The program of the building is a researchcentre located in the national reserve De Veluwe. The brown coloured spaces are reacearchcentres, red is the canteen, light blue the toilets and dressing rooms, purple the instructions rooms for example children and visitors of the reserve, dark blue the archive and the yellow spaces are the corridors.
Axel warns me for some things. He told me I must not only be concentraded on the floorplans. With this step I anchor me a lot, it was a step to far. Now I want concentrate me on more omportant things, like volume and how the light is entreing the building. In the train I made a small plan for DIALux what I want to research; orientation of the building, volume, place of the functions in the building and the geometry. So I don't anchor my whole design before programmising, but the solution must come out by all the studies I want to made.
Today and tomorrow I begin with the lightstudies in DIALux, so I hope Hester could help me a little bit. I don't know some things now, so it would be helpfull. If it's not possible (Hester visit a conferention) I studie some other things like needed luxes and stuf.

Meeting Hester Hellinga
For my project I want to research some daylightstudies. Therefore I want use DIALux. Hester told first something about daylights theory. After that she showed how DIALux is working and she give some smart tips. Also I presentate my plan shortly to her and discussed what is possible with the program. Some of my researches are not possible in DIALux, so I have to change it or delete it by my plan. I'm a bit dissapointed that some of the issues is not possible, but I want to reach a perfect form.
The picture below showed a result that's made in DIALux. After my studies I want to make pictures like that. So I know what the mount of luxes and illuminances is for my project.

Second meeting, 15-09-2008
Axel was not there, so we discussed with Rudi about it. I think my short presentation was clearly to Rudi. Tomorrow I post the whole plan on my blog, now my head is a little bit empty. (I think the weekend is the reason..) Rudi underlined that formulate your goals is very important. Also describe your parameters is a must.

Form Follows Daylight (FFD)
Also yesterday I followed the lessons by Axel about parametric design. First I thought it was nothing for me, but when I see with my own eyes how the program is working, it is realy useful for me. We discussed with Axel about the research questions of all the present students. My discussion was very helpful for me, we talked about how I could use Microstation and I really wanna use it for my research. Now I am busy with following the tutorials of Microsation, so I could maybey use it next week.
The picture above showed the diffeculty in my problem. I really want to know al these distances and propertys, but maybey I use Macrosation for it, so my solution can be in two ways. After that ( when I have enough time over) I wanna design a new material for my roof.
This weekend I can't message you, because I had other things to do. Monday I will update my blog. Have a nice weekend everybody!

Update Blog
Could somebody help me by a small problem?
Below the links I want to show some photographs. I use Google Picasa for it.. How can I put my photographs on my blog?
I look forward to hear your answer.. (maybey..)
New Developments
The statement Form Follows Function (FFF) inspired me a lot till this day. FFF is shaped in the beginning of the 20 st century. It was a principal of the modern architecture and industrial designing. Some great architects in that time were Louis Sullivan (America's First Modern Architect), Mies van der Rohe (Bauhaus Architect), Frank Lloyd Wright (America's Most Famous Architect), Walter Gropius (Founder of the Bauhaus), William Le Baron Jenney (Father of the American Skyscraper). Functionalism interest me also a lot, it is near bounded with the previous statement and the architects. Why al that fuss? People need a space to live, to work, to enjoy, to relax, to sport, to study and many many more! Maybey I fly of the handle, but I want to make clearly I want something to do with my short explanation.
Tuesday I read a article about lightpipes. They used it for underground buildings. My first main question was: How could we built underground buildings with a maximum of daylight? It was a daring item I think, but I want more. Now I want make a space that spring from a ideal daylight scenario. My next theme is: Form Follows Daylight (FFD). The reason for the switch is my interest in functionalism and it create a more challenging excersice for my project. Also I think it is more mixing with architecture. An undeveloped specialism by me is designing or architecture. So I want to do more with it.
By so far my new theme! I hope you understand it.. Critique and reviews are very welcome..

Some interesting articles
My plan for this week, update is thursday I think, is to describe my whole plan of approach. My plan includes a planning for the comming six weeks, parameters for my design, goals, reasons of interest and I wanna try, in this stadium to come to a smart solution. After this week I complete my proposal.

Meeting monday 8 september
idea to everybody. Therefore I made a small presentation to describe my ideas.
During the meeting I hope the teachers give me a lot of feedback, so I can work further this week. The very small presentation is showed below.
